Episode 1: Redlining in Atlanta
In this episode of Metro Health Matters, presented by ARCHI, host Jeff Smythe sits down with Dr. Tabia Akintobi of Morehouse School of Medicine for a timely conversation about redlining, community-centered public health, and the ongoing relationship between place, policy, and health in Metro Atlanta.

Together, they explore how historic housing discrimination shaped neighborhood investment, wealth-building opportunities, access to resources, and health outcomes—and why those impacts continue to show up today.

Dr. Akintobi also discusses what it means to move from community participation to community leadership, how ARCHI’s concept of “inverting the burden” connects to health equity, and what it would take to repair structural harms in ways that are truly community-centered. This conversation invites public health leaders, healthcare systems, community organizations, policymakers, and residents to think beyond programs and toward long-term systems change rooted in collaboration, accountability, and local leadership.
